Hi Claudio,
At first, I must say how pleased I am to hear about an open source project
concerning RIS & PACS.
PACS softwares are usually very expensive, and even if it is possible to
find parts of codes for DICOM, it is a hard time to understand how it works.
As for the choice of Borland's tools, there are pros and cons :
Pros :
- good tools with a lot of "ready made" visual components (VCL)
- Object Pascal and C++ compatibility
Cons :
- If you need the "enterprise" release, it costs a lot
- You only "cross-develop" for Win and Linux (still some Macs here and
there)
- Very hard to change toward another compiler as soon as you use VCL
Odyssee is currently developped with Borland's C++ Builder. Fortunately, we
use very few VCL components.
We have lots of code using Object Windows Library (OWL), but Borland no
longer supports it, and - even if a nearly open source OWLNEXT project
exists - it is "Windows only".
I am looking for another GUI Library : Qt seems good (I use it for Linux),
but is free for Linux only (http://www.trolltech.com/) ; maybe wxWindows is
the best choice (http://www.wxwindows.org). Any advice from the list ?
Regards,
Philippe

Subject: Open Source Windows
Greetings all. This is my first post to this list since joining, so let me
take a quick moment to introduce myself.
My name is Claudio Saccavini, I am the chief of The Laboratory of Digital
Imaging in the Dpt Medical & Diagnostic Sciences at The University od Padova
(Italy). We are developing an Open Source project call Raynux about
Radiology software (RIS & PACS) and you can meet us at
www.rad.unipd.it/raynux/ .
We believe that Open Source is not against someone (Windows) but Open Source
means free knowledge.
We choose to develope our project using Delphi & Kylix (Borland) in order to
use the software with Windows or Linux: the operative system is a free
choice of the user himself.
What do you think about this solution?
Bye,
Claudio Saccavini
