Very interesting... Perhaps equally interesting to this is the fact that any Java 2D API code can produce SVG at the "press of a button":
http://www.sun.com/software/xml/developers/svg/java2d-api/ So, yes, you don't have to dirty your hands with SVG itself, if you don't want to or can't for some extraneous reason. And, just to reiterate, SVG is the *only* vector graphics functionality out there for the web that is non-proprietary.
