Please access the details of the workshop that Dave mentions at:
http://www.infosci.coh.org/gcrcworkshop/
A session has been provided to highlight Open Source approaches. Though the workshop is only open to people associated with GCRCs, all those on this list may communicate to Dave, Gunther and Andrew Ho, if they wish to highlight any aspect of information technology facilitating biomedical research.
NCRR (http://www.ncrr.nih.gov/) policy decisions may be influenced by what is discussed in the workshop. I see a potential for a launch of several open source projects in collaboration with the GCRCs.
Biomedical research, particularly Clinical trials area, has much to benefit from the open source. Not just in terms of exploiting the software but also about how to bring about effective collaborations with disparate groups.

Subject: Re: Any open Source clinical trials management systems?
We are using the OpenEMed framework (http://OpenEMed.org) for managing
clinical protocols at the City of Hope as part of the FIRST project
there. There will be
more discussion of this at the Integration workshop of the GCRCs October
29-30. In fact, Andrew Ho and Gunther Schadow will
also be tthat meeting.
