UPS requirements can actually be a lot less. You can operate a diskless Via Epia Mini ITX board fanless @ 600 Mhz, which will use less than 20W (maybe 40W with ample RAM and a CD drive operating now and then), running straight from a 12 V battery (which is what I do with my thin clients - I ether-boot Linux remotely on these silent mini boxes). Meaning that even cheap off-the-shelf UPS devices wiill either be able to power multiple of such clients for a few minutes, or one of them for literally hours. = Take the "appliance idea" one step further and integrate software like OIO into those devices Could be done for <U$300 for a brand new box incl. operating system/software on CF.
