I believe that a broader term has been in existence for some time, it just
hasn't been recognized. I believe that "open source" indicates a
point-in-time product; which gets updated over several points-in-time.

The process of creating useful "open source" software and other open
collaborative ventures could be better referenced by the term "open
project". Sourceforge.org and most other "open source" download sites call
their knowledge bases "projects" as in "open [source] projects" in which
anyone can contribute.

Siobhan O'Mahony and Fabrizio Ferrao recently published an interesting study
on the development and management of Debian called "Managing the boundary of
an 'open' project.

THE OPEN PROJECT PUBLIC LICENSE (OPPL) VERISON 1.0

Critics of ODP have questioned the propriety of ODP having private editor
forums in what is purportedly an open project, as both Go and Zeal have
always allowed public access to their forum discussions. However, the
defenders of ODP's private forums assert that such forums are necessary for
the discussion of matters that are internal to ODP. Even so, some of these
private forum discussions have been published outside of ODP after being
forwarded to ODP's critics by anonymous ODP insiders.

There are three essential characteristics of the Wikipedia project, which
together define its niche on the World Wide Web:

It is, or aims to become, primarily an encyclopedia.
It is a wiki, in that (with a few exceptions) it can be edited by anyone.
It is open content, and uses the copyleft GNU Free Documentation License.
