Hi Calle, Thanks for your email, and your investigation of OpenEMR (http://www.openemr.net).
As you know, OpenEMR is a free, open source application. Anyone can download, install, customize and use OpenEMR. There are no user or licensing fees related to OpenEMR. We provide implementation, migration, customization, support and training services for OpenEMR. Your first question relates to display with non-standard equipment. This is a general issue that is not specific to OpenEMR. If a client has non-standard equipment, we can assist them with customizing OpenEMR to run on their non-standard equipment. Your second issue relates to data validation, specifically in encounter forms. OpenEMR encounter forms are derived from users, other developers and us. We do not control the quality or data validation that other clinics choose when creating their forms. Forms are included in the download version of OpenEMR to assist clinics who will be using their own development resources for implementation of OpenEMR. As part of our standard installation services, we customize encounter forms for a clinic to help them match their work flow, ease the transition from paper to computer and for any other requirements, such as data validation. In the forms we create for our clients, we can create data validation, "exploding" CPT coding and other features to make the forms fit the current work flow of the practice. We also work with clinics to make the forms compatible with specific devices, for use in particular environments, for transmission over lower speed Internet connections, and a variety of other purposes. Another item that you did not discuss, is OpenEMR support for ART (anti-retroviral therapy) or PMTCT (Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission). Neither of these features exist, and we will be adding this support. These are features to be customized for the project as well as charting concerning the patients' health. These are a few of the many issues that we have been discussing concerning OpenEMR that need to be customized for this project. We have a 42 page document of OpenEMR included and customizable features which can be found at: http://openemr.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=getit&lid=2 Thanks again for reviewing OpenEMR and for your thoughts. Sincerely, Walt Pennington Pennington Firm 402 West Broadway 4th Floor San Diego, CA 92101-3554 619-696-5050 888-480-5050 PennFirm.com - there seem to be no validation of the data taking place. You can add any garbage: pregnancies lasting 50 weeks, obviously nonsense dates etc. The first issue should be relatively trivial to fix, but the second is serious - in particular if the system is to be piloted for HIV/AIDS in a resource-constrained setting. Is there any way you can set constraints in openEMR? Regards calle
