This is another reason why free file formats must be
encourged. The use of proprietary formats will one
fine day, hold one to ransom. It is a bit worrying
that even in the FOSS world, things are changing from
ascii, ps and Tex/Latex to OO sxi and other formats.
With OO using more and more java, things could become
complicated in the future.

The loss suffered in Europe vis-a-vis the patents
issue, the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, the USA
patriot act are making things quite complicated for a
free, electronic publishing world in the internet and
outside it, and to information sharing across the
seas.
