It sounds like there was an expectation that with a "good system" the
hospital could reduce staff or assign other tasks to the nurses with the "extra"
time freed up by the system. It has been our experience that regardless
how hopeful organizations are that an IT system will allow them to reduce staff
and that this staff reduction should be a part of the benefit accrued to IT this
has never been the case. In all instances, when the benefits realization
program has examined the benefits realized by the system they are not due to the
ability to reduce staff or to put them on other tasks. The benefits
realized are centered on elimination of duplicative efforts (such as lab and
xray tests, etc.), decreases in medical error and better data for improving
operations.
