Since a daemon can not use a terminal,  its messages are written to
logfiles in /var/log.  For mandriva, it is /var/log/syslog, for RedHat/SuSE
it is /var/log/messages

The two environment variables are:

  export OPENHPI_ERROR=YES to see errors
  export OPENHPI_DEBUG=YES to see debug output

Beyond this, you probably need to run the daemon in the foreground, as:

  openhpid -n

Otherwise, it will put itself in the background, changing the standard
output and error file associations.
