There is no sort of fee, royalty, or anything else. Note that because the open source license is very permissive, it does allow individual companies to integrate OpenHPI with their proprietary products and software and sell the entire combination for a profit. But the original OpenHPI code will always stay free. Note also that the "freeness" we speak of above refers to source code copyright and license to use the source. There may be trademarks involved, and trademarks are an entirely different topic. I'm not qualified to venture even an opinion in that area. However, the OpenHPI project itself doesn't have any registered trademarks that I'm aware of, and does no trademark enforcement.
