Check out oneSIS (http://onesis.org). It can build initrds for you that do NFSroot (and drop to a shell when things go sour). I'd love to hear some feedback from people familiar with running NFSroot.

we actually build our own initrd's here.part of that is because gen1 IB drivers can't be built into the kernel, but it also gives us better fail over options too.
