I'd like to verify that this is indeed a MAD layer issue, and not a problem in the user-to-kernel interface, or lower level driver. After the hang, were any applications able to run? Did you try running any kernel tests, like grmpp or cmatose? Loading madeye after connectivity is lost could also be helpful.
