By keeping all APIs to a single library with compatibility code, it's easier to 
convert to the new APIs.  The changes can occur one call at a time, versus 
converting everything in an application at once.  There's only one library to 
download, build, and install.  Fixes to the library don't need to duplicated.  
Etc.
