Of course 1023 is not prime -- since (a^2 - b^2) = (a - b) * (a + b),
it follows 2 ^ 10 - 1 = (2^5 - 1) * (2^5 + 1) = 31 * 33.
I don't see why you care about the range being prime, but the closest
primes to 1024 are 1021 and 1031.
