I am extremely happy to see Don's response to the problems outlined in
this thread.
Definitely some support from the OIDF is needed to get Europe on track.
Don:
Prague in late April seems fine from a climatic point of view, but I am
not sure that an OpenID seminar or workshop should be an integral part
of the Catalyst Conference. I think the matters prospective large RP's
want to have resolved before kick-off are much more basic business
issues: "Whats in it for me?", "How will it impact my existing
userbase", "Did anyone else do it with success ($$)?", and in some cases
"Is it secure?" They need a cookbook rather than a palette of 100
options, which is why I think is is important to have the UI and AX
specs settled asap. It is also a question of whether the location(s)
should rather be selected based on the concentration of potential RP's.
Maybe now is a good time to start gauging the interest in various countries.
Santosh:
As soon as you take OpenID to assurance levels higher than 0, we have
common legislative issues and industry associations within Europe that
makes a coordinated effort feasible in some respects. Whether or not a
separate organization is mandated or not should be resolved as part of
the work proposed by Don. In general an organization has a purpose if it
facilitates the work that needs to be done rather than getting in the
way of it (btw. thats why OpenID-DK is organized as a network rather
than a legal entity).

PS: Please don't argue about "politics" and "DNS". OpenID should be
independant of DNS. here are some examples.
1) My OpenID http://santosh.in
2) somebody elses OpenID http://example.jp
3) another example http://example.com/joe
In all the cases above you can see that we are politically independent
yet technologically exactly the same.

Hi Don,
I think you have missed the point entirely. Let me quote our
european colleagues. " was also wondering whether it would be more
appropriate to have one single consolidated foundation".
Right! Lets think in terms of one single consolidated foundation.
So what have you got to say about that?
Now let me add my personal views to this. Living in an
increasingly globalized world, something so universal like
"identity", should be globalized and made "one".
Instead of breaking up OpenID into cultural, geographic and
language boundaries, we should be working towards unifying OpenID
into one universal Identity.
I think it is ridiculous to think of OpenID europe, or OpenID
Japan or OpenID India or whatever you want to call it.
Thanks

The OpenID Foundation has much work to do in Europe in 2010.

I plan to propose a 2010 OpenID Foundation EU committee to:
1. Review the analysis underway of our trademarks and brands
2. Discuss EU membership outreach and organization
3. Review EU budget plans and priorities.
With that new committee's help and that of Henrik, Snorri and
others, I plan
to propose the 2010 board sponsor a "OpenID Summit Europe" to
occur around
the Burton Catalyst Europe, April 19-22 in Prague. I have
been invited to
speak at that conference http://www.catalyst.burtongroup.com/eu10/

Subject: [OpenID board] Status of the OpenID Foundation Europe
Hi Snorri,
how are you doing? I have not heard anything from you for
quite a long time.
Yesterday, I discovered that the openid.dk <http://openid.dk>
domain registered by OpenID
foundation Europe had expired and had been deactivated.
I have now managed to pay the invoice and get the domain
reactivated.
However, I wonder about the situation of OpenID Europe
Foundation in
general. You have done an impressive job of aquiring the
European and
National Trademarks for OpenID as well as several national OpenID
domains on behalf of the EU foundation, and it would be sad to
see the
result of these efforts vanish.
If there are no resources available to maintain OpenID Foundation
Europe, maybe it is appropriate to consider how this IPR may be
consolidated within the global OpenID Foundation (or
alternatively at
the national levels).
Best Regards,
Henrik Biering
OpenID-DK representative
