Do you have a Ryzen system running openindiana? If so, do you observe
this bug during shutdown? The symptoms are described in this bug
report:

    https://www.illumos.org/issues/12473

According to the Xorg log file, Xorg terminates early, before it can
complete restoring the terminal. The culprit is not Xorg itself, but
some other process that kills Xorg. My current suspect is the parent:
lightdm.

There is a related bug that happens on boot. The result is the same
black screen with a white cursor. The GUI login box never appears on
the screen. Have any of you seen this? This web page:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LightDM#LightDM_does_not_appear_or_monitor_only_displays_TTY_output

gives a potential solution. I haven't tried it yet.
