it didn't wanna produce a core anymore but instead simply quits after the taskbar tab shows something like "starting printer manager" for a couple of seconds. neither messages no the cups error log showed anything.
however i got the printer to work anyway. simply installing print/cups/hal-cups-utils did the trick. maybe that should be noted somewhere because installing cups itself provides access to network printers only. localhost:631 still shows "not found" but the /admin part works and the cups error log complains about some unknown idle timeout option. neither causes trouble printing though. if i should get a core again i'll post the mdb results.
