Generally speaking, from hardware:

1. ProLiant DL380 G4 does not support IPMI. Don't try any IPMI effort on
this kind of machine at all !

2. ProLiant DL380 G5 supports limited IPMI commands without LAN
interface. With OpenIPMI kernel driver and lan module installed
(ipmilan), you can do a query IPMI over LAN interface( IPMI 1.5 ),
again, the command set are really limited, and somehow not friendly. For
example, its FAN speed will have a value of 0 - 100 without unit
specified. If you use their iLO interface, you can see it actually means
percentage of max speed, and you will find its FAN speed always report
below lower non-critical threshold in IPMI while "normal" in ILO.

HP has stated they perfer SMASH to IPMI, so don't expect they will
provide a good IPMI support in ProLiant DL series.

If you can change your target machine, it is better to use DELL
PowerEdge series, they support a lot more IPMI commands and IPMIoverLAN.

If anybody is interested, InterVoice did implement some of IPMI command
over LAN in Java.
