There is sample code in the "samples" directory that shows a lot of this. If you just want to periodically query a single sensor, openipmi is probably overkill and ipmitool would be simpler. If you want to continuously monitor a bunch of sensors or a large number of systems, the openipmi is probably the better tool.
Also, events are something specific in IPMI.
