I've experienced the exact same problem. However, I don't and haven't ever had the IcedTea plugin installed. If it helps, I have a few extensions installed: Flashblock, the StumbleUpon toolbar, and user agent switcher. The behavior happens about 1 in 6 times I run Firefox, and will always lead to a crash within a few minutes if the blank window is closed. The windows usually seem to pop up early in a runtime, often within the first few pages that are loaded. It doesn't seem to crash, though, if the blank window(s) are not closed. I've never caught firefox's stderr output when the behavior occurs, though. This has occurred in both the beta 5 that first shipped in Hardy, and in the new presumably-rc1 version that was pushed in an update.

Status in Source Package "firefox-3.0" in Ubuntu: New Status in Source Package "icedtea-gcjwebplugin" in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Binary package hint: firefox-3.0 When entering some web pages (most notabily the Yahoo web based classic mail manager) a blank window appears (to be more precise, a plain Frame with no components in java-swing terminology), then the tab where the page is open slows down and after some time - it could be just some seconds or a minute o two, firefox crashes. It seems to be something realted with the IcedTea gcj plugin, but I can't confirm it yet. Ill try disabling it for a while. Here is the stderr produced during a faulty session.
