Ah drat - good catch! Well, that takes me back to square one....

We could go with the override invalidate() on Cell.setItem(...), but I really don't think that is right. I think it'll have to be back to the drawing board for this one.

This is a breaking change. If I subclassed Cell and overloaded it (still
leaving it protected) I'll then get a compiler error because I can't
reduce visibility in a subclass.
