The patches pointed to by the message do solve many of the problems that you mention (not the WMS side). Getting these patches into openlayers is just a case of getting tests written. If you have other useful patches then lets unify. The next problem is determining whether the weirdness that happens when you shift the 180 degree line from left side to the right side of the screen is due to OL or geoserver. Finally need strategy for getting lines/polygon to project and render on the server side which will be server specific.
