I would actually ask this on the Geoserver list.
Also, try it in cURL, REST Console, or Fiddler. If you can mess with the parameters a bit and get it to work, then you know you can force OL to do the same. If it won't work in that pure request/response environment then it is not going to work in OL and the problem is likely a geoserver issue. Personally, I would search / ask on the geoserver users list first, if geoserver should support that use case. If not, or if it is a known issue, then you can stop trying to get it to work in OL.
