I'm sure you are correct about scripting only being able to handle the low hanging fruit since you have actually been working with it. Looking at ExtJS, YUI, and Google's closure js framework; they do have to use a LOT of html to get decent class and method descriptions. However, looking at SproutCore, they are able to use JSDoc and get decent looking descriptions in their API docs.
