Yeah, this shoud be obvious, as there is colorful world outside of web-mercator. There is no point to recreate Leaflet. Many usecases uses national basemap in national coordinate system and all raster and vector overlays are also in national coordinate system. These use cases live in they own EPSG:CODE, so all input coordinates should be also on that. But as default coordinate system is web-mercator, which is not used outside of tiling (at all), it is reasonable, that data is assumed on wgs.
