Confirmed, I stumbled through this with my experiments in GeoExt recently. 

As an added note if you find yourself making more use of (Geo)Ext panels and
collecting "items" into "parent containers", you'll definitely need to give
your parent a height/width. Items only need a height/width if they are not
positioned into the center block. (The center block auto-sizes to fill
remaining space). There's a brilliant primer to setting up some slick
