I would look at doing the following:

- Use a tile cache in front of your WMS server if you're not doing so already.
- Set appropriate expiration headers on the image tiles to leverage the browser 
cache.
- When you create your WMS layer in OL you could also try setting the layer's 
'buffer' option to zero, this will prevent OL from requesting additional tiles 
outside the map viewport.
