Thanks Ian for the hint. But just to make my point clear, I want exactly the opposite behavior as what you propose.
I guess I'll have to deal with the output properties of Mapserver so that transparency is supported in those tiles which fall at the very edge of the extent area of the overlay. That should remove the white areas. Any other ideas on how the problem could be solved directly from openlayers?
