>The namespace prefix is ambiguous, which is why GeoServer does not
rely on it.

I dont follow this at all. The namespace prefix IS the namespace name.
http://maps.gns.cri.nz/geoserver/wfs?service=WFS&request=DescribeFeatureType&typename=gns:PETROLEUM.SEISMIC_NZMG&version=1.1.0

works fine.

I found the featureNS in the wfsCapabilitiesParser and it contains the
namespace URI. In practise this can contain any old junk and geoserver
at least does not check that it is unique.

I have been unable to find URL in the form
http://maps.gns.cri.nz/geoserver/wfs?service=WFS&request=DescribeFeatureType&typename=PETROLEUM.SEISMIC_NZMG&namespace=xmlns%28www.gns.cri.nz%29&version=1.1.0&namespace=anything
that returns valid.
