The geodesic option has no effect unless you also include Proj4.js.
Just include the following before the OpenLayers.js (or upload
proj4js.js to your website).
Is this also true for the ScaleLine control which also has a geodesic
option?

The scaleline control does not use the proj4js library, however I'm not
sure if geodesic scales are accurate unless your map is in either
EPSG:4326 or EPSG900913:
* {Boolean} Use geodesic measurement. Default is false. The
recommended
* setting for maps in EPSG:4326 is false, and true EPSG:900913. If
set to
* true, the scale will be calculated based on the horizontal size
of the
* pixel in the center of the map viewport.
For the geodesic measurement tools if you do not have proj4js it is
assumed you are using EPSG4326, other projections will return incorrect
results, as I understand it, unless Proj4js is added.
