Hi Andreas,
Did it work with "extent"?
I use this doc:
http://dev.openlayers.org/docs/files/OpenLayers/Map-js.html#OpenLayers.Map.OpenLayers.Map
It has more properties than the doc you pointed to.
Firebug shows also properties from link above. However I still did not find
where "extent" property is listed.
