What do you mean by "specify the region that is covered by the icon
images" exactly, can you give an example of specifying it? Of what it
would be a region, in what units?

Currently I believe the system simply uses the entire rectangle
occupied by the image, and I think that will be incorrect, when you
have a collection of markers that are close to each other.
