Thanks Ravi, I have been down that road before but I couldnt get it to work! Maybe I wasn't putting the code in the right place, I am an openlayers newbie'working on trial and error!
Also you say not the best solution... is there a better one? My code is posted above so I wont bother duplicating it, all help is really appreciated, I'm doing this as a volunteer project and to expand my knowledge of web based mapping... I'm nearly there, just the last few stumbling blocks!
