What am I doing wrong?
One icon appears correctly upon page load. (It's that small cross-hair
at map center.) The second - which should be identical - shows the OL
default one instead. Click the "Add Icon" button at screen bottom:

I suspect it's related to clone() somehow, but none of the combinations
I've tried work.
