How about this? (What I do). Create drawFeature control using a display layer and point Handler. Register a featureadded event handler which creates a BBOX or DWITHIN (not all server can handler this...) filter. Create a wfsProtocol on the layer, and then wfsProtocol.read with that filter. In my case, the callback on the read, draws the selected features (unless I have used SLDSelect instead) and creates a popup from the returned attributes.
