I just wanted to confirm that very large polygons disappear at very high zoom levels (e.g. 17).
For example, see the polygon example at http://dev.openlayers.org/releases/OpenLayers-2.11/examples/regular-polygons.html Choose "large" for the size, "circle" for the shape. Draw the polygon, then start zooming in. When you get to around the 2nd to last zoom level, the polygon disappears.
