I have found that for IPad3 at least, very good results for raster png layers
are obtained by setting a layer's tilesize at zoom z to 128 pixels whilst
fetching 256 pixel tiles from zoom z+1 (same x,y). Of course twice as many
tiles have to be loaded from the server - you can't get something for
nothing.

Are there any other tips about for optimising for Retina type displays ?
