if the layer is in utm, I think yes, by default the measurement will be in meters (as far I know). I don't work with geoserver so I can't help you much here, but the value you get can be converted to miles in javascript, you would just need to catch the value before it gets printed.

So if the layer in geoserver is UTM -- the measurement tool cannot generate miles ? What do folks do to make this work as a general solution -- regardless of the projection in the layer?
