Thank you Borlafu, Thank you for your input. For a web based application, your approach is correct. I would use a PHP script to handle the gpx file creation and the email handling.
But as this is for a Phonegap based app, I was able to accomplish sending the email with the gpx file directly from the device (no server involved) using the File and EmailComposer APIs. I have been using it for a few weeks now and has worked perfectly both in Android and iOS devices.
