It has just happened again. This time I immediately attempted a simple ldapsearch from one of the client boxes, and it did, indeed, hang for over 30s before finally returning a result. Shortly thereafter the problem corrected itself.
A quick look through the logs indicates the clients had been timing out for about 10 minutes before I noticed it.
