You're probably not checkpointing often enough for your workload. Read
the slapd-bdb man page and/or Admin Guide and/or list archives on the
subject.
It would be good to know the openldap release, as well. I recall with the
OpenLDAP 2.1 series for a while checkpoint didn't work, and you had to run
the bdb checkpoint binary from cron manually to make sure it was happening.
