Thanks - I always forget to look in the FAQ!!!!
Have adapted it slightly so my script would now say
EPASS=`perl -e 'print("{CRYPT}".crypt("$NEWPASS","SC")."\n");'`
But the comparison option in phpLDAPadmin still fails. AM I doing this right?
