The only thing that comes to mind is the ability to have comments in the 
configuration.  Other than that, nothing.  Even internally, slapd.conf is 
converted to a cn=config db by slapd.  What cn=config does that slapd.conf 
doesn't do, is help ensure correctness in configurations.
