I actually agree with you  on the visibility, I too like them.
Probably most of the tech people agree, but for the 
common folk this information might be confusing.

Both Windows and Mac actually hide filename extensions by default and thus
normal users really never see them. (Unless they are using OLP)

Bug description:
  At the moment OLP displays filename extensions such as .jpg, .png,
  .mov, .ppt, .pdf and .mp4 for media files.

  I feel like this information is irrelevant and should be hidden by default.
  Users could still see their filename extension by using their OS file browser 
if they so desire.
