openLDAP is a typical authentication system that will not let OM know the
user
password and works by kinds of "service ticket" and web redirections.
Another system
widely used in Universities is CAS (Central Authentication Service:
http://www.jasig.org/cas).
I think OM needs a generic authentication layer so that any authentication
module
can be plugged to OM without touching OM the core code.
We have this issue as well in LimeSurvey (www.limesurvey.org) where some
authentication modules were added directly into the core code, and this has
make it
difficult to maintain: that's why I give you this advice now ;-)
