There are 2-3 version of the user-pic with different sizes. You first need to request the user pic in mid or large size.
If you integrate with moodle or other 3th party apps, you need to make sure that you also request the pics in bigger size from their system. You won't be able to make those changes without editing source code an re-implementing some parts also to make it visually appealing.
