The GSM subsystem is powered directly from the battery (through a switch) so yes, you'll lose your call if you remove the battery. Not sure why Wolfgang mentioned the LEDs. They're on IO_3V3, so they should be fine. (Note that whether a system will boot without battery also depends on the PMU's initial configuration and the state of the backup battery.) - Werner
