I had the idea your /dev/* direct register access might be bypassing it. OTOH for debug purposes, it might be a good idea to bypass the buffer for *reads* via register-device. In the end there might be some registers that actually change value (DC D/A, JACK_INS etc). Though I guess those aren't buffered anyway, they aren't strictly ALSA related. ;-)
