Indeed `suspend' sound like the right solution here.

the host CPU to run.
Could the touchscreen be physically powered down and powered up on
a key
press or GSM Activity easily? I was under the impression that I
saw the
lock screen on one of the distros but powering the device down to save
power makes more sense to me.
imagine using your FR as a music-player, carrying in your pocket
with every move you make, you touch the screen of your FR
in current state your FR burns a lot of energy for driving display/
backlight you don't see because it's in your pocket
with disabling the touch (stop emitting any kind of events) you allow
the FR (X11) to turn off display/backlight and save energy
