I would recommend that you use the Oracle JDK 1.7u45 or above to run
OpenNMS instead of OpenJDK. Do not use Oracle JDK 1.8 (Java 8); we are
not compatible with Java 8 at this point. There are several bugs in our
bug database related to occasional OutOfMemoryErrors being thrown with
OpenJDK. I can't say that I remember one about SocketException, however
everything should be rock-solid when using Oracle's JDK instead.
